The Empire's central spiritual rite — a journey to Aura's surface to experience the moon's psionic hymn firsthand. Pilgrims seek Ascension; the Synod seeks to control who hears the song.
The Journey
The Chroma Pilgrimage is the central spiritual act of the Empire: a journey to Aura's surface to bathe in the moon's psionic hymn. Pilgrims believe that prolonged exposure to the unfiltered Chroma can trigger Ascension — the permanent unshackling of consciousness from the material body, achieving a state of pure thought the faithful call the Resonance.
The Trial
The Pilgrimage is not safe. Aura's unfiltered song is overwhelming to unprepared minds — hallucinations, personality fragmentation, and catatonia are common among those who venture too deep without Synod-sanctioned shielding. The Synod requires all pilgrims to pass through its refinement cathedrals first, receiving "attunement screening" that — coincidentally — also screens for psionic potential the Synod might wish to recruit.
The Schism
The Dissonant Choir teaches that the true Pilgrimage requires no Synod intermediary — that Aura's full song, including the forbidden frequencies, is the only path to genuine Ascension. They run unauthorized pilgrimages through the Threshold Veil, guiding the desperate and the faithful to hidden anchorages on the moon's far side. These pilgrims sometimes return with powers that terrify the Synod. More often, they do not return at all.
