The First Pilgrimage

Historical event · The Chroma Pilgrimage

Back to world

The original journey to Aura's surface by thirty-seven psionics centuries before the Synod's founding — the event that established the Chroma Pilgrimage and proved that direct exposure to the moon's song could trigger permanent psionic Ascension. Nine Ascended; fifteen founded the Resonant Order; thirteen died, their crystallized remains still visible in the spires.

The First Pilgrimage

Before the Empire, before the Synod, before FTL — a band of thirty-seven psionics from a dozen worlds crossed the void in slowships to reach the crystalline moon that sang in every psionic dream. They called themselves the Tone Seekers, and they were the first sentient minds to stand among the Resonant Spires and hear the full Chroma unfiltered.

What Happened

Of the thirty-seven who descended into the spires:

  • Nine Ascended — their minds expanding beyond the need for a physical body. They became pure psionic resonance, merging with the lattice of the moon itself. The Order calls them the Ascended Chord and believes they are still present in Aura's song.
  • Fifteen survived but permanently altered — their psionic abilities amplified beyond any previous record. They founded the Resonant Order to protect what they had found and guide others who sought it.
  • Thirteen died — their nervous systems unable to withstand the raw Chroma. Their crystallized remains are still visible in the outer spires, fused into the crystal walls. Pilgrims call them the Still Ones and touch their surfaces for luck.

Legacy

The First Pilgrimage established the rite that became the Chroma Pilgrimage and the Order that guards it. It also established the truth the Synod would later try to bury: that Aura is sentient, that the song is a call, and that what the Tone Seekers heard was an invitation — not a resource.
