Raw, unrefined fragments of Aura's crystal — crushed, burned, or injected for unstable psionic highs. It grants temporary powers to the ungifted but causes progressive nervous-system crystallization that is always fatal.
Lunar Dust
Lunar Dust — "dust," "grit," "the raw song" — is the lifeblood of the underground and the secret shame of the Empire's golden age. It is Aura's crystal, unrefined.
Origin
When Synod harvesters cut the Resonant Spires, they produce two products: refined radiance (clean, stable, Synod-monopolized energy) and fines — the crystalline dust and debris left over from the cutting. Officially, fines are industrial waste, swept into containment and disposed of. Unofficially, tons of it flow through the Drift Cartels' asteroid tunnels into the hands of anyone desperate enough to pay.
A second, rarer source exists: wild dust, crystal that has naturally eroded from the Spires over millennia and drifted through space on solar winds. Wild dust is less potent but untraceable — impossible to trace back to a Synod cutting operation. The Sodality of Drifters makes its living finding wild dust deposits in derelict asteroid fields.
Effects
Dust can be burned, snorted, injected, or embedded under the skin. Each method delivers Aura's raw Chroma frequencies directly into the nervous system — all of them, simultaneously, without the Synod's careful filtering.
The Bureau's Paradox
The Bureau of Frequency Integrity is mandated to seize all dust and eradicate its trade. But dust seizures are funneled into Synod research labs, where engineers study it for ways to extract more efficient Chroma refinement — making the Bureau both the dust trade's greatest enemy and its single largest customer.
