Before the Fall, Duskward revered a pantheon of divine beings said to have blessed the kingdom's founding. Now, clerics argue fiercely whether the gods abandoned the realm, were corrupted by the Unravelling, or never existed at all.
Duskward's oldest texts speak of the Saints—beings of divine radiance who walked the kingdom in its age of building and blessed the spellwork that would hold it together. Temples were raised to them; priests maintained wards and ceremonies. For six centuries, the faithful believed their gods watched over the realm.
Then the Fall came, and the prayers stopped being answered.
The official Council explanation is that the divine departed Duskward because they foresaw its corruption and could not bear to watch. But whispers suggest darker possibilities: that the gods were corrupted by the Unravelling, their blessings turning to curses. Or, most heretically, that they were always illusions—metaphors for the spell-logic rather than actual entities.
Some temples still stand, now refuges for the desperate or bases of operation for the factions. A few priests maintain their duties out of memory or stubborn faith. The Collective has learned to exploit religious fervor for profit. The Council studies the old theologies for magical insight.
Whether the Saints exist or not, something has gone terribly wrong with the world they supposedly blessed.
