Resonant crystals grow slowly in spaceways where FTL traffic is heavy. The constant hammer of jump-echoes gradually encodes itself into silicon structures, creating lattices that vibrate in sympathy with spacetime patterns. When processed correctly, they become:
- Echo-Storage: Raw data repositories that can hold millions of encrypted jump-signatures.
- Array Components: Refined crystals power Imperial listening stations and black-market echo-skimmers.
- Implants: Criminal surgeons grind resonant crystals into neural paste, creating false echo-senses—addictive, dangerous, and spreading the Resonance Plague.
- Currency: A single high-quality crystal can purchase a ship, a safe house, or a year of passage through Syndicate-controlled space.
Sulphur Drift is strip-mined almost entirely for resonant crystals, with the Imperium extracting the best grades and selling inferior ones to the open market. The mines are hellscapes of indentured labor, unsafe conditions, and echo-contamination.
