The Solhrein Cascade

Historical event · Aethelgard

Back to world

The worst Flare-Touched disaster in Imperial history — a single botched tithe-discharge triggered a chain-reaction that leveled three city wards, killed thousands, and left a permanently glowing crater sealed under sun-glass at the heart of the capital.

The night the Emberheart district burned.\n\nIn the 187th year of the Empire, a young Awakened woman named Leyna Thoress — a seamstress, by all accounts unremarkable — suffered a flare during a crowded tithe-collection in Solhrein's Emberheart Ward. Her surge triggered six sympathetic flares in the queue around her. Those six triggered nineteen more. The cascade rippled outward through the ward's densely packed tenements, igniting over two hundred Awakened citizens in a chain-reaction that lasted forty minutes.\n\nThe light was visible from the Ashen Peaks. Three wards were leveled. The Crown-Legions threw up sun-glass barricades and sealed the district; those who survived the initial blast but were still burning were "mercy-purified" by Radiant Order dawn-knights. Officially, the death toll was 1,200. Unofficially, closer to 3,000.\n\nLeyna Thoress's name is invoked by the Embergrove Compact as a martyr — a common woman destroyed by an unjust system. The Order uses the same name as a warning: this is what happens when vigilance fails. A scorched crater at the heart of Emberheart — now sealed under a sun-glass capstone and marked with a dawn-court tribunal hall — still radiates faint residual magic. It is said that on cloudless nights, you can see ghost-light flickering beneath the capstone: the echoes of two hundred souls who burned together.
