The Everflame

Landmark · Aethelgard

Back to world

An eternal pillar of living solar fire burning atop the Emberlight's lighthouse-fortress. Tended continuously by the Radiant Order since the Age of Dusk, it is the anchor of Phaethon's power in the mortal world — and if it ever guttered, the Blight would sweep inward unchecked.

The Flame That Holds the Dark

The Everflame is no ordinary fire. It is a conduit of Phaethon's divine will — a piece of the Sun-God's own essence, burning in the mortal world since the fall of the Old Gods. Its light extends far beyond what eyes can see, forming a ward-net that restrains the Cimmerian Blight at the continent's edge.

Keepers of the Flame

A dedicated order within the Radiant Order — the Flame-Wardens — tends the Everflame in rotating shifts that never leave it unattended. The duty is both sacred and dangerous: prolonged proximity to the Everflame intensifies an Awakened person's magic, sometimes catastrophically. Flame-Wardens who serve too long inevitably become Flare-Touched — and are quietly judged in the dawn-courts they once served.

What Is Whispered

The Compact believes the Everflame is not holding the Blight back — it is holding the Old Gods down. They claim the flame is anchored to the Cimmerian Deep itself, a chain of light binding the imprisoned deities. If this is true, extinguishing the Everflame would free the Old Gods and unleash the Blight simultaneously — a catastrophe the Compact sees as salvation.
