The Grey Thaw Wallows

During the brief Grey Thaw, the surface ice of the Ashen Mire melts just enough to expose what lies beneath. The bog is built on layers of Vorgath's dead — not just soldiers, but entire villages that sank during the early years of the Dimming, when the ground liquefied under their feet.

What Surfaces

  • Weapons and armor from a dozen forgotten wars — some still gripped by the hands that once held them.
  • Preserved corpses — perfectly frozen in the peat, their faces contorted in terror. When the ice releases them, the Cold Below reanimates them within hours.
  • Pre-Dimming artifacts — pottery, coins (old Gold Suns), religious items, occasionally something stranger. The Long March Caravan pays well for intact relics pulled from the Mire.
  • Drowned soldiers — the most feared. The Ashen Mire was the site of the Battle of Greyfork, fought seventeen years ago between the Compact and a peasant revolt. The dead of Greyfork are angry, and they remember.

The Greyfork Dead

The Greyfork dead are different from ordinary risen corpses. They move with purpose, fight with crude tactics, and guard the area around the battlefield as though still holding the line. The Ashbound Covenant has tried to speak with them — the Greyfork dead do not listen. They only hate.
